The short answer: one system or two
Most comparisons put these two side by side as if they compete on the same ground. They mostly do not.
Cloud Assess is an assessment and evidence platform. Its centre of gravity is field assessment — observation, workplace evidence, a dedicated offline mobile app, assessor sign-off, third-party reports, RPL. It is not designed to be an RTO's student management system, which is why most RTOs running it also run an SMS beside it.
RTO Grow is a whole-lifecycle system: compliance, student management and learning delivery in one place — and it captures the same classes of workplace evidence Cloud Assess is known for, inside the system that also holds the student record, the outcomes, the certificates and the AVETMISS reporting. Observation checklists signed criterion by criterion, photo, video and audio captured as first-class answer types, third-party reports, viva, file evidence and scanned paper — all recorded against the attempt, in an append-only ledger, with the assessor's declaration freezing their credentials at the moment of marking, and a submission evidence PDF generated at the point the student submits.
So the real question is not "which is better at assessment." It is "do I want my evidence inside the system of record, or in a second system connected to it?"
Where Cloud Assess is the better choice
- Your assessors work genuinely offline, at volume. A dedicated offline app with reliable sync is Cloud Assess's specialty. RTO Grow captures evidence on any device through the browser and supports paper workflows with scan-and-attest upload, but does not have a dedicated offline app. If your assessors spend days in black spots, this is Cloud Assess's strongest card and we will not pretend otherwise.
- You already have an SMS you are happy with. If your student record and AVETMISS are settled and only assessment hurts, adding a best-of-breed assessment layer is a sound architecture — and in that setup Cloud Assess is the natural pick, because it was built to be exactly that layer.
Where RTO Grow is the better choice
- You want one system, not two. Cloud Assess is usually paired with a separate SMS. That means two vendors, an integration, and a standing question about which system holds the truth about a competency outcome. One system means one audit story — and at audit, two systems disagreeing about an outcome is a worse position than either system alone.
- Your evidence should land in the same record you report from. In RTO Grow, the observation an assessor signs in the field is the same record that drives the unit outcome, the certificate and the NAT file — no export, no sync, no reconciliation. Attempts are append-only, answers are snapshotted at submission against the exact tool version, and assessor credentials — TAE, industry currency, WWCC — are frozen into the declaration at the moment of marking.
- AVETMISS is your pain. We generate every NAT 8.0 file from the same records trainers used and validate it before lodgement, naming each problem and its severity, with every export recorded against a file hash — and we are listed on the NCVER AVETMISS Compliant Software Register for release 8.0 in all states and territories. An assessment platform, however good, does not fix reporting.
- You need the whole front end too. Enquiry, application, LLND, automatic USI verification, enrolment, payment, certification. Cloud Assess starts later in the journey than we do.
- Your delivery is mostly online or blended. If you are not doing much offline field work, you would be paying for the part of Cloud Assess that is its main differentiator and not using it.

The honest middle case
Some RTOs genuinely need both halves at full strength: heavy offline field assessment and a demanding student management and reporting operation. If that is you, run the two-system architecture deliberately rather than hoping one product stretches. Decide up front which system is the source of truth for outcomes, and make the integration carry that decision — because at audit, two systems disagreeing about a competency outcome is a much worse position than either system alone.
What we would not do is buy an assessment platform hoping it grows into an SMS, or accept a two-system architecture without first testing whether one system covers your real evidence workflow. Both of those mistakes are common, and both are expensive in opposite directions.

Is Cloud Assess an LMS or an SMS?
Neither exactly. It is an assessment and evidence platform with learning delivery around it. It is not designed to be an RTO's student management system, which is why most RTOs running it also run an SMS.
Can RTO Grow do workplace assessment?
Yes — observation checklists signed criterion by criterion, third-party reports, file and photo evidence, video and audio as first-class answer types, viva, and paper with scan-and-attest upload, all recorded against the attempt with the assessor's declaration and credentials captured at marking. The one thing we do not have is a dedicated offline app, so if your assessors genuinely work in black spots for days at a time, test that difference against your real conditions rather than taking either vendor's word for it.
Which is better for a trades RTO?
Run one real assessment through both. If your assessors are consistently offline and your SMS is settled, Cloud Assess as a layer is a sound choice. If you want the observation, the outcome, the certificate and the NAT file to be one record in one system — with the reporting validated before lodgement — RTO Grow does the whole job, and you can verify that in a trial with your own unit.
