Trainers mark from one queue. Multiple-choice, ordering, matching, slider and hotspot answers score themselves when a student clicks "Check my answers". Written, file and observation answers go to a trainer, who marks each question "Satisfactory" or "Needs work", gives feedback by text, voice or video, signs a declaration, and marks the student competent.
Marking that trainers actually enjoy
Trainers didn't get into training to fight software. In RTO Grow, every piece of work waiting for them is in one queue, every answer is on one screen, and the result they give goes straight to the student's record. Nobody re-keys a mark, and nobody types up a certificate by hand.
As at 5 October 2026, students have submitted 2,135 assessments online in RTO Grow, and trainers have marked 2,390 units competent.
One marking queue
Work waiting for marking sits under "Assessments" in the office and "Marking Queue" in the trainer portal. Filter by status: awaiting, not started, not yet competent, resubmit in progress, overdue or marked competent. Sort by who's been waiting longest, and group by class, course, unit, assessment or trainer.
Trainers see their own pile, or flip to see every student in the RTO. Each card shows how the work arrived: submitted by the student, auto-marked quiz, or captured by the trainer.
Quizzes that mark themselves
Multiple-choice, multi-select, drag-to-order, match-pairs, slider and hotspot questions score the moment the student clicks "Check my answers". Students see how many tries they have left before it goes to their trainer, and you set the number of tries per offering, course or RTO.
When every answer in a class's work scores correct, the class page tells the trainer it's ready to check and confirm. The final competent decision is always a person's.
Eight ways to submit
Students can answer online, do it on paper, be observed, sit a viva, submit a third-party report, record audio or video, or join a video call. Paper work runs through the same queue, so nothing gets lost in a drawer.
Feedback by text, voice or video
On each question the trainer clicks "Satisfactory" or "Needs work" (or "Observed" and "Not observed" for observations), types feedback, or records a voice or video note. Final comments sit on the whole attempt.
"Needs work" sends the work back with the trainer's feedback and a resubmit-by date. The student sees exactly which questions to fix, fixes them, and resubmits.
Every decision signed
Every sign-off carries the assessor's declaration and their typed name: "I have personally assessed this student's work. My judgement is my own professional opinion. I attest that my credentials remain valid." RTO Grow checks the assessor's credentials at the same time. If an owner or admin records a result for another assessor, they sign a declaration naming that assessor.
From satisfactory to competent
The unit's assessment hub counts how many assessments are done. When they're all done, "Mark student competent" records the final result on the student's official record. When every unit is competent, the enrolment completes itself and the certificate is ready. See certificates.
Mark a whole class in one go
Open any student's row on the class page or the Day board to see their units and assessments, and mark, confirm competent or issue in place. Or click "Record class results" to mark everyone who attended competent on the class's units, sign once, and move straight on to issuing certificates and cards. From the queue, tick several rows and click "Mark selected".
Mistakes fixed, history kept
A trainer can take back their own mark within three minutes. After that, an owner or admin can reverse a mark with a reason, and the audit trail keeps both. "Re-open marking" records an amendment with its reason, and "Grant extra attempt" sends the work back to the student.
Evidence ready for audit
Every attempt can be exported for audit as a CSV, with all its media in a ZIP and an evidence record PDF. Each student's evidence bundle includes the assessor's and the student's declarations. See compliance tracking.

Frequently asked questions
Which questions mark themselves?▾
Multiple-choice, multi-select, drag-to-order, match-pairs, slider and hotspot questions. Written answers, file uploads and observations go to a trainer.
Can trainers mark a whole class at once?▾
Yes. "Record class results" marks everyone who attended competent on the class's units in one signed step, then moves on to certificates and cards.
How does feedback reach the student?▾
As text, voice or video on each question, plus final comments. Work marked "Needs work" goes back with a resubmit-by date and the questions to fix.
Is the assessor declaration kept?▾
Yes. Every sign-off records the declaration and the assessor's typed name, and both declarations go into the student's evidence bundle.
Can paper assessments go through the same queue?▾
Yes. Record a paper result in the queue, or let students download the assessment PDF and upload a scan.
What if a trainer marks the wrong thing?▾
They can take it back within three minutes. After that, an owner or admin reverses it with a reason, and the history keeps both.
Can we build our own assessments?▾
Yes. Build them in the assessment editor, or let AI draft an assessment pack and marking guide for you to review and approve. See the LMS.
