About this course

This qualification trains you to operate a wide range of heavy plant and equipment used on civil construction sites across Australia. You will work across units covering machinery such as graders, dozers, front end loaders, scrapers, rollers, compactors, backhoe/loaders, skid steer loaders, and tip trucks, as well as gaining the practical skills to read construction plans, apply risk management processes, and maintain site quality standards. The course also includes units that lead to formal high-risk work licences, including a boom-type elevating work platform licence, a non-slewing mobile crane licence, a dogging licence, and basic scaffolding. This course suits people who are entering civil construction for the first time or who are already working on site and want to formalise their skills across a broader range of plant. If you are comfortable working outdoors in physically demanding conditions and want a qualification that reflects the real variety of tasks on a civil construction project — from earthworks and pipe laying to erosion control and pothole repair — this training is designed with that breadth in mind. After completing the qualification, you will be able to operate multiple classes of civil construction plant, apply safe work practices in line with WHS requirements, interpret job specifications and plans, and hold the licences required to legally perform high-risk work in those specific areas. Career roles include plant operator, civil construction operator, and site labourer.

What you'll learn

  • Operate a range of civil construction plant and equipment including dozers, graders, rollers, loaders and excavators in accordance with manufacturer and site requirements
  • Read and interpret civil construction plans and job specifications to guide on-site work activities
  • Apply risk management processes and WHS policies to identify hazards and control risks on civil construction sites
  • Conduct erosion, sediment control and conservation earthworks to meet environmental and project standards
  • Perform dogging and basic scaffolding operations in compliance with relevant licensing and safety requirements
  • Use hand tools, power tools and small plant equipment to carry out manual excavation and site preparation tasks
  • Maintain site quality standards by monitoring work outcomes against project specifications and reporting non-conformances
