About this course

This unit covers the skills and knowledge you need to safely and competently operate a skid steer loader on civil construction sites. You will learn how to carry out pre-operational checks, start up and shut down the machine correctly, and use the loader to move and place materials, dig, grade, and clear site areas. The unit also covers how to identify and respond to hazards, follow site safety requirements, and complete the required workplace documentation. This unit suits people who are working in civil construction, earthworks, or land management and want to formalise their skid steer loader skills, or those who are new to plant operation and looking to build a practical foundation. If you already operate a skid steer loader on the job, this unit gives you a nationally recognised credential to support that experience. Once you have completed this unit, you will be able to operate a skid steer loader in line with industry standards, site plans, and work health and safety requirements. You will understand the machine's capabilities and limitations, and be able to carry out a range of operational tasks with confidence and accuracy. Roles in this field include civil construction labourer, plant operator, and earthworks operator.
