About this course

This unit of competency covers the skills and knowledge you need to safely operate an elevating work platform (EWP) in a resources and infrastructure setting. You will learn to plan and prepare for EWP operations, conduct pre-operational checks, set up and position the equipment, and carry out work at height in line with relevant safety requirements. The unit also covers shutting down the EWP correctly and completing any required workplace documentation. This training suits people working in construction, civil infrastructure, mining, or related industries who need to operate boom lifts, scissor lifts, or similar elevated work platforms as part of their role. It is also well suited to workers who are new to EWP operation and want to build a solid foundation, as well as experienced operators looking to formalise their existing skills with a recognised unit of competency. After completing this unit, you will be able to conduct pre-start inspections, identify and respond to potential hazards, operate the EWP safely within its rated capacity, and follow shutdown and reporting procedures. These practical competencies apply directly to day-to-day site work and support your broader compliance with workplace health and safety obligations when working at height.
