Encourage understanding of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples' cultures

This unit focuses on building your knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' histories, cultures, and ways of being, and then putting that knowledge to work in an early childhood education and care setting. You will learn how to create environments and experiences that genuinely reflect and respect the cultural identities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families, and communities, drawing on the National Quality Standard and the Early Years Learning Framework. The unit suits people working in or entering early childhood education and care who want to move beyond surface-level cultural activities and develop a more informed, respectful practice. It is also well suited to educators who work with or alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities and want to strengthen those relationships in a meaningful way. After completing this unit you will be able to reflect on your own cultural assumptions, embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives into daily routines and learning experiences, and work collaboratively with families and community members to ensure cultural representation is authentic and ongoing. These are practical, observable skills you can apply directly in a childcare, preschool, or family day care setting.
