Where: Trainer portal → "Marking Queue", or a student's unit page
A practical or observation pack is one you assess yourself — you watch the student do the task and tick the checklist. The student submits nothing. If you can't get into the checklist, one of the things below is usually the reason. Work down the list in order.
1. The pack says "Waiting on student" and there's no "Mark this pack" button
This is the most common one. A practical pack only becomes yours to mark when every item in it is set up as something you tick — an "Observation" item. If even one question in the pack is set up as a student answer (a written response), the system thinks it's still waiting on the student, hides the mark button, and shows "Waiting on student" instead.
You have two ways forward:
2. You got a red error screen, or were sent back to the login page
Your sign-in timed out (this happens after a while for security). Log back in and try again — nothing you did was lost. If you had two tabs of RTO Grow open, close the extras first; two open tabs can log each other out.
3. The pack is greyed out with a "Held — hidden from student" note
The pack hasn't been released to the student yet. Press "Release to student" on the pack row first. (Observation packs you assess in person are usually never held — if you see this on a normal written pack, that's expected.)
4. Everything looks right but there's still nothing to click
If it genuinely still says "Waiting on student" and none of the above applies, the pack is correctly waiting for a student submission. If you assessed the student in person and they'll never submit online, that's exactly what "Override — I have the evidence" is for (see step 1).
Good habit before you sign anything off The "Override — I have the evidence" window always lists the criteria you're attesting to. Read that list before you attach your evidence — it should match the practical you actually observed, and the file you attach should be the completed checklist, not a logo or a blank form.
Still stuck? Contact your admin. If a whole course's practicals behave this way, one question in the pack is probably set up wrong — that's a quick fix in the pack editor, not a fault with your account.
